Why I Picked it Up :
I picked up a Colleen Hoover after so long. Almost two years after I read "It Ends With Us". The first book moved me a lot and the way it spoke about domestic violence. A story that is sort of an open secret in the world yet often feels like there's nothing we can do about it. I recently watched the movie version of "It Ends with us" but it turned out to be disappointing. But that sparked something in me, and I realized it had been too long since I picked up another one of her books. So, Regretting You was my choice, and I had high hopes for a similar emotional depth.
What I like about the book :
I like the way Colleen reflected on the mother-daughter relationship - especially when it involves a teenager and their circumstances are so flawed. I also enjoyed how Hoover backed up Romantic feelings between Morgan and Jonah through a backstory. It kind of made me revisit few of my earlier attractions in life. And not to forget the part where she explains Clara on how one needs to remove themselves from toxic situations or deal with them like how Jonah did. It was appreciating that the author did not show Clara like a matured teenager in a whirlpool but rather put out all the emotions of a teenager outright. However, I also like that side of Clara, where she separates her liking for Elijah from the weird circumstances they are surrounded in.
What didn't work for me :
I some how felt "Regretting You" had predictable lines across few pages, especially when dealing with Romance. The sudden escalation between Jonah and Morgan's romance didn’t quite sit right with me. I found myself wishing for more—a bit more time spent on Morgan figuring out her life outside of love. For example, I would have loved to see her getting a job or making moves towards rebuilding her independence. There were moments where I felt the story could have taken its time a bit more, particularly in the romance department. It was sweet, but rushed.
Finally, Is the book really Worth it ?
Its a good read. But If I have to compare it with my first ever Colleen Hoover read Then I would say "Regretting You" did not have a great impact on me. I still enjoyed it to fullest and could easily scan through the lines that seemed predictable. I’d recommend it to Hoover fans, but if you’re looking for something with a deeper impact, this one might not be the first choice.
