***Spoiler Alert***
Why I Picked It Up:
After watching the movie adaptation of "It Ends With Us", I realized I hadn't read Hoover's work in a long time. That’s when I bought a set on Amazon that included "Regretting You", "Ugly Love", and "Reminders of Him". I started reading in that order, and right now I'm on "Reminders of Him".
What I Like About the Book:
I personally liked the storyline. For some reason, I was more drawn to Miles than Tate (though I’m not defending his actions at all). I appreciated the writing style and felt a connection to the bond between Corbin, Miles, and Tate. I liked that the author kept it realistic—she didn't make Corbin easily accept the relationship between Miles and Tate just because he had a casual attitude toward his own relationships. This kind of hypocrisy is something we often see in the real world. And honestly, I would have been frustrated if Corbin was okay with it right away just because he is so casual about relationships. Though there were only a few sweet moments between Miles and Tate, I truly enjoyed them. 😻
What Didn’t Work for Me:
There were a couple of things that didn't work for me in this book. Among the three Hoover books I've read so far, I would rank this one last. I love it when intimacy is part of a book, and I’m always curious to see how beautifully the author brings it to life. While Hoover did a great job in her writing, I felt like I was reading very little story surrounded by a lot of say-x. The moment where Miles calmly walks away, leaving Tate lying there feeling vulnerable, was tough to read. It made me wish Tate hadn't been put in that position. To me, there seemed to be more love between Rachael and Miles than between Miles and Tate. I understand that the book is called Ugly Love, and maybe that’s why it’s written this way, but I would have preferred a little less say-x and a little more story. 😐😐
Finally, Is the Book Really Worth It?
I wouldn't say it's an absolute must-read, but it’s a good book if you're stuck in a lengthy read or if you haven't picked up a book in a while and want something lighter to ease into. If you’re a Hoover fan, you’ve probably read it by now, if not, give it a try. 💕🤗
Publication Year: 2014
Awards:
Ugly Love was not awarded major literary prizes but was a bestseller, gaining praise for its intense emotional depth and character-driven narrative.
